US universities remain as among the most popular for thousands of international students. In the past several years, the volume of those students who attend colleges in the country has been rising steadily. The Institute of International Education estimates that about 700,000 international students are enrolled in US universities and colleges annually.

The US remains as the most preferred destination for numerous international college students. That is despite the fact that the UK, Canada, Australia, and other nations are beefing up their efforts to attract international students. The UK is still the second most popular destination for foreign students, with an annual international-student-enrollment of about 350,000.

A greater number of those overseas college students are Asians. It is estimated that about 62% of international students in the US come from various countries across Asia. That compares to just 13% of foreign students who come from Europe and about 10% from Latin American countries. Here are the top three universities with the highest number of foreign students enrolled, based on data from the Institute of International Education.

Columbia University

Columbia University in the City of New York is the oldest higher learning institution in New York. It currently operates up to seven Columbia Global Centers abroad—in Beijing, Istanbul, Amman, Mumbai, Paris, Nairobi, and Santiago. The university is best known for administering the prestigious Pulitzer Prize. It is also affiliated with a greater number of Nobel Prize laureates compared to any other academic institutions globally. Not surprisingly, it has the biggest foreign student population, which is about 26% of all international enrollees in the country.

Harvard University

Without a doubt, Cambridge in Massachusetts has become popular among foreign students because it is the site of the prestigious Harvard University. That is logical as it is the alma mater of eight US presidents, 75 Nobel laureates, and 62 living billionaires. It also has the biggest academic library in the country, which is also one of the largest ones in the world. About 23% of foreign students in the US are enrolled in the university.

University of Southern California

The oldest private research university in California has one of the biggest population of international students in the US. About 22% of total foreign students in the country are enrolled here. Its location in Los Angeles, California is strategic in forging relationships with other research institutions especially across Asia and the Pacific. For high schools students preparing for college, earning an academic scholarship is a promising and prestigious way to pay for school. As the price for education at many colleges and universities rises, the competition for academic scholarships has become more intense. Test Scores
College entrance exams give colleges and universities another means of measuring a student’s potential. The scores often serve as a major factor in college admission. Although some schools do not emphasize high test scores for admissions, but focus on grades and character, students hoping to earn academic scholarships should not put themselves in this category. Some awards are focused on a particular field of study in addition to academic performance. Activities
While academic focus is a good things, many scholarship committees believe that a well-rounded student has more to offer their school than a bookworm who never ventures out of their shell.
